OnPublish - Facebook

OnPublish is a Libsyn app that will publish your posts out to your Facebook Pages and Timelines the same as any other destintation (such as your feed, blog page, and so on). The post can even automatically link out to the Libsyn Podcast Directory app so your listeners can easily access your media directly from your posts, no searching needed.

Lets get started!

Setting Up

Log into your Libsyn Dashboard and hit Destinations, then Social Destinations.

On Publish

Click on Connect Facebook Profiles and Brand Pages

On Publish

You will be asked to approve app permissions in Facebook. Using the option to the bottom left you can choose who sees the app on your Timeline, then click the Go to App button found on the upper right hand side.

On Publish

You will be asked to approve permission for the app to manage your pages and post on your behalf. If you agree, hit the Allow button.

On Publish

You will be redirected back to Libsyn where you can edit your Facebook OnPublish settings. You can pick which pages and/or profiles your posts will appear under, and also set the app to NOT post to Facebook if there is a problem with any of the Facebook destinations. Hit Save Facebook Connections and Options.

On Publish

This is what the page will look like once you save it. Note, you can go back and edit your settings at any time, or even remove it completely.

Publishing

Publishing with OnPublish is the same as publishing any other time. Go to your Publish option to publish a new episode, and under Basic editing you will see the following. Note the only change, a new field for a Custom Facebook Message. This will appear as the heading for your Facebook post.

On Publish

If you typically use Advanced publishing, the Facebook message option will appear under Description (2) in the process.

Below, you can see an example (using Advanced publishing) of the form being filled out.

On Publish

Again in Advanced publishing, you will see Facebook OnPublish as a new Destination option. You can choose not to publish to Facebook, or set release dates for it just like any other destination.

On Publish

Once published, the system will show that the episode has been released to Facebook OnPublish. Note, it may take a few minutes before OnPublish gets released, it may say Pending instead, this is normal.

On Publish

Once the episode is released, it can be seen on the newsfeed...

And on the Timeline...

On Publish

When a listener sees your post on Facebook, they can click on the post and be directed to the Libsyn Podcast Directory app to play the episode.

On Publish

You can also choose to edit the settings to Facebook OnPublish so that the post does not link to the Libsyn Podcast Directory app, in which the listener will be directed directly to the media file.

But What Happens When...

In order for OnPublish to work, it has to have a connection to your Facebook account. If you change your Facebook password, use multiple Facebook accounts, or for other reasons based on the internal workings of Facebook, that connection (authorization and verification) can break. When that happens, the post will not release to Facebook and you will get an e-mail letting you know.

To fix it, log into your Libsyn Dashboard, go to Destinations --> Social Destinations, and hit edit for the Facebook connector. Libsyn will take you back to Facebook for you to verify permissions. Once done, save your Libsyn changes.

Next, you need to republish your episode. To to Publish --> Previous Posts. Edit the post and hit the Publish button (you don't need to make any changes). Within a few minutes, the episode should publish out.

Additional Notes

  • You can add as many Facebook accounts as you wish. They will be identified by your profile name in the destination step of advanced publishing as well as on the social media page. If you have multiple Twitter accounts and post using the basic publishing system, your post will publish to all Facebook and Twitter accounts.
  • These posts do not go to fan pages, they will appear under your timeline.
  • If you are using a feed sync, your posts will not automatically publish to the social media destinations. If you have an episode you want posted to a specified social network after the post has been synchronized, you can do so by manually editing the post and checking off the social network destination.
  • While the post date and time can still be edited inside Libsyn, Facebook will show the date/time the episode was posted to them regardless of what is entered into our system. The On-Publish app has no control over this. For example, if you edit a post that was made a year ago and set the date to be a year ago and post out to Facebook today the date shown in Facebook will be "today".
